The Business of Attraction
Whether you’re a consultant with a five figure day rate or the owner of a small retail establishment, the key to success is attracting new clients and customers to your business.
For many, many years the act of attracting new people to your business was referred to as "marketing." However, over the past decade or so, the term "marketing" has been abused and used in place of
- Sales
- Advertising
- Product Development
- Customer Service
It’s been used in help wanted ads to disguise telephone sales a.k.a. telemarketing jobs as "career opportunities"
It’s been used by advertising sales people who want to sell you an ad on a placemat, who call the ad "marketing."
After yearrs of abuse, the word marketing has almost become a "dirty" word.
Yet, marketing, as defined by Wordsmyth is "all of the activities involved in transferring goods from a producer to consumers, esp. including advertising."
I prefer to define marketing in this manner:
Marketing is merely what you do to let people know what problems you can help them solve or what goals you can help them meet.
Doesn’t that sound a LOT less scary.
If you don’t know what problems you solve for your customers or what goals you help them to meet, then it’s time to figure that out. Then the rest will be easy!
