A really good reason why your site isn’t showing up in Google…

I began my morning as I always do, by checking my email.

Now, I’ve written previously about how my client Carol Solomon and I have formed a joint venture providing stand alone blog installations as a boot strap marketing tool for entrepreneurs. In the past two months, I’ve done dozens of these installations for both her clients and my own.

Well, this morning, I got an email from one of our first blogging clients.  She wrote to me and asked me why her site wasn’t showing up in Google yet.

She registered the domain name in January and here it is, the end of February and she STILL isn’t listed yet.  Not only has the site not had TIME to get indexed… SHE HAS YET TO MAKE A SINGLE POST!!!!

I get wanting Google to perform marketing magic for your business…. however it takes a LOT more than just registering a domain name, setting up a web site and waiting for the profits to roll in.

In this client’s case, she’s had me put up a website (in the form of a blog) and doesn’t understand WHY her web site with NO CONTENT (well, it does have the standard, "Hello World" post that comes standard with a Word Press Installation) isn’t showing up when she searches for highly competitive terms.

I’m happy to put in place the tools you need to promote your business.  A blog is a WONDERFUL web marketing tool.  A blog allows the business owner to easily update content on the web site.  The blog also encourages clients to keep that content CURRENT!  Stale copy is the key reason most web sites suck.

A blog allows you to keep your content of your web site fresh and up to date.  When you do that, you’ll find that your posts will make it into Google’s index once your blog has served it’s time in the Google Sandbox.  Actually, you’ll probably find that your posts do better than your standard web pages do, just because posts tend to be keyword specific, which is something the Googlebot loves.

However, if you think that putting up a blog with no content is going to make you millions…. well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news…but it just ain’t gonna happen.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it “ranks”, the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of searches, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.
As a marketing strategy for increasing a site’s relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site’s coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove them from their indices.
The initialism “SEO” can also refer to “search engine optimizers”, terms adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems, URLs, and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.
