Social Bookmarking as a traffic generation tool

It’s no secret that utilizing  social bookmarking sites is a GREAT way to drive traffic to your blog or web site.  However, it’s not as easy as just issuing a press release.   There are social bookmarking secrets which include actually participating in the social aspects of the social bookmarking site!

First, a primer for those who may have heard about social bookmarking but don’t know what it really means.

Social bookmarking sites include del.icio.us, MyBlogLog, Stumbleupon, and Bumpzee which have gotten more popular because of their marketing potential.  

These sites allow you to "bookmark" web pages and make comments on them. You can then access your bookmarks from any computer connected to the Internet. Of course, the real POWER in Social Bookmarking sites is you can share your bookmarks with others, thus the word “social” in the name.

For example, Andy Beard shares this:

I am very active on Bumpzee running one of the largest communities (No Nofollow), and it really is only since I started investing time in building that community that I saw a major benefit other than for networking and discovery.

Ah, there’s the rub.  Only when you’re an active participant in the community will it pay you back with more traffic to your blog.
